River Story
Built in 1926, this charming, rustic summer cottage was renovated and expanded for contemporary functionality and comfort while at the same time highlighting it’s historic legacy. The house sits on a spectacular point of land, overlooking a body of salt water called “The River,” and enjoys stunning water views from every room.
Creative work was required to achieve this tricky balance. To preserve the exposed frame and beadboard interior, a new roof and walls with mechanicals and insulation were built around the original cottage.
As the lot is closely surrounded on three sides by water, conservation regulations significantly limited options for much needed enlargement of the living spaces. Small bump-out additions were added to create a mudroom, and to enlarge and update the kitchen.
In addition, the house was lifted and given a new foundation that enabled the creation of a full size, finished basement, with ten foot high walls, complete with an exercise room, recreation room, office, storage and an additional full bathroom.
